My brother is a religious man. When we were kids, he used to tell us that he wanted to become a priest. This did not happen though since he met Sally and they got married. When my sister-in-law was pregnant, my brother was so busy scanning the internet using our portable compact laptop to find a gorgeous name for his daughter. Since my brother is religious, he opted to name his daughter after a famous saint. At first, he wanted to name his daughter Ursula. But when his wife disagreed, he chose the name Veronica after Saint Veronica.
When my brother named his daughter Veronica I thought that he named her after the Archie Comics character, Veronica or Ronnie. Aside from being religious, he was also a huge Archie Comics fan. He loves the character of Veronica even though she's mean and shallow. My brother corrected me by saying that she named my niece after the woman who wiped Jesus' face on his way to the cross. The name of that woman is Veronica. When Jesus was on the way to Calvary, she helped him.
Saint Veronica is famous for the shroud. The shroud is the piece of cloth where the image of Jesus Christ appeared. Remember when Jesus was on his way to the cross? Veronica came near him and cleaned his face with a piece of cloth. After that, Jesus' face miraculously appeared on that cloth. After Jesus died, Veronica became a faithful servant of Jesus and every time someone looks at the shroud, people are healed of their sickness whether physical or spiritual.

I never realized that baby names could be so diverse. The queer thing is, it may take a while to choose the moniker that's perfect for your baby. If you ask me though, there is nothing more insightful than actually looking around and getting inspiration from the everyday things you see. I'm sure you won't name your baby girl "Chair" or "Knife" but there are some creative souls out there who can't help but distort these names a little, take a good look at the calendar, or call their overseas Spanish friends for help.

For example, some of the most popular female infant names are christened after colors: Amber, Hazel, Aubrey (auburn), Violet, Olive, Scarlet, Goldie, Rose, and Esmeralda. These names are pretty easy to remember because their attributes can be seen anywhere. One look at the baby's eyes and you know she deserved to be called "Hazel." Another inspiration for a baby girl's name are birthstones, the months of the year, and wine. Babies can be called June, April, and May, as well as Pearl, Sapphire, and the more general "Jewel".

I have a friend (a new mom) who's a wine connoisseur who has vowed to call her baby girls after her favorite wines: Brandy, Kirsch, Sherry, and Margarita. Would you call your baby Pinot Grigio or Rhum? When stumped, another friend of mine who lives in Texas would ask around a mostly Hispanic neighborhood. She didn't run out of possibilities. They recommend the names Milagros, Soccoro, Carmela, Odessa, Juanita, Evangelina, Francisca, Florita, Herminia, Celina, Gloria, Felisa, Dolores, Barbara, and the ever-popular Maria in case she wanted a Latin sobriquet.

When my sister was pregnant with her first child, we were all very excited to find the perfect name for the child. At that time, we didn't know the sex of the baby because during the ultrasound, the baby was in a sideview position and the doctor can't see the genitals. We made a bet about the child's gender for five dollars. I bet that my sister's child is female because it's in our genes to have female siblings. Others bet that it's a boy because of the shape of my sister's baby bump. After the gender-betting, my sister asked us to give a name for her child since she can't think of any. I gave the name Naima, after the famous America's Next Top Model cycle four winner Naima Mora. The name is very beautiful and pleasant to the ears.

My sister and I love to watch America's Next Top Model. Although we like Kahlen Rondot than Naima, we were happy when the latter won the model search competition. From the bios I've read abut Naima, I found out that she used to work as a waitress in a coffee shop. Naima was named after the song of John Coltrane's Naima. She even has a twin sister named Nia who looks exactly like her. One of the striking features of Naima is her mohawk hair and multiracial appearance. She's part black, part Irish, part Mexican, and part Indian. She is America's Next Top Model winner and has appeared in several TV guestings and shows.

When I suggested to my sister that she should name her baby Naima, if ever it turns to be a girl, my sister was ecstatic. She also likes that name because it's unique. Using our dsl broadband internet, we researched about the meaning of the name. We searched everywhere but we found nothing. We only discovered that the name Naima is a title of a song that we haven't heard yet. My sister wants to know the meaning of the name because there's a belief that the meaning of the name will determine the persona of your child. I assure my sister that Naima is a fine name. Just look at the model's credentials.

Alice Walker, a renowned novelist and poet, is famous for her works that depict the struggles and trials of African-Americans, especially the plight of women. In her novels, stories and poetry, she emphasizes the concept of the existing racial prejudice that whites have for blacks. She even discerned the idea that there's discrimination within the spirited black Americans themselves. In her novel, The Color Purple, she narrated the story of a woman who is molested and raped by people belonging to the same race as the woman's. Her novel stirred a lot of controversies and issues, and even angered the black community. In fact, Africa- Americans said that Alice Walker is a racist since she writes negative things about her race. This pained Alice very much since she is no racist. She just wants to speak the truth.

African-American writer and feminist, Alice Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia in the United States on February 9, 1944. She is known for her Pulitzer award winning novel, The Color Purple. At an early age, she was blinded by her brothers temporarily for shooting her eye with a toy gun. Walker is also famous for admitting that she is a lesbian. Some of her works like The Color Purple have female homosexual themes. Her other novel, Possessing the Secret of Joy, tells us about the African ritual of castrating girls so as not to enjoy sex. Alice Walker has contributed a lot of literary works and ideas to help us understand better the situations of African-American women.

The African-Americans and Jews have one thing in common -- they both experience racial discrimination in the hands of people who treat them as "others". Although race is based on skin color of the person, it is a major factor in how a person treats another individual. Admittedly, Sometimes, there are cases when we become guilty of the crimes we attribute to others; just like what's happening with the Jews right now. They think that they're the victims when, in fact, they are also discriminating other people. I understand that they have experienced suffering and pain ever since biblical times, but that doesn't mean that they have the right to treat people outside their race like enemies.

For all the Catholics out there, I bet the name Bernadette Soubirous is familiar. She was the famous woman whom the Mother Mary especially chose to make an appearance to and give a message for the whole world one fine morning in 1858. Bernadette of Lourdes, as she is known today, was born in 1844 to a miller family. She's the eldest of six children. Although she came from a poor family, Bernadette maintained a cheerful disposition in life. Mother Mary appeared before her in a cave near the place where she and her friends gathered wood. Mother Mary pointed to Bernadette a spring and asked her to drink from it. After this incident, a lot of devout Catholics visited the spot because it was said to miraculously heal all kinds of infectious deadly sickness. But if there were believers, there were also skeptics. Later in life, Bernadette became a nun and was known all over the world as tho woman who saw Mary's apparition.

In our British Literature class, my professor asked us to form a wide circle. What is this again, I asked myself. The professor was a Socratic kind of teacher. It turned out to be fun, after all. He told us to share why our parents gave us our names and to relate the meaning of our names to our personality. The one that stuck to my memory is my friend Bernadette. She said that she was named after her father, Bernard and not after St. Bernadette of Lourdes. She narrated that people often say that her name is ironic to her personality because she's not demure, religious and even saintly like the Saint Bernadette. But, according to her research, the name Bernadette suggests someone who is a creative genius and temperemental. A person named Bernadette is dead serious about life and is easily hurt by circumstances in life, she found out. When we heard her explanation, we definitely believed her because the explanation is related to her persona.

One fine morning, I received a text message saying that the most romantic thing a person could utter is your name. At first I didn't understand it but as the day went on, I realized that names are relevant because it's the first thing that you tell someone whom you just met. This is the reason why we feel offended and hurt when someone doesn't remember our name. I have a friend named Bernadette whom the male guard in our office calls Catherine. Whenever she passes by, the guard would say, "Hi Catherine." Who wouldn't be annoyed with that? Anyway, I told her to correct the guard. Bernadette said she does everytime but he still kept calling her "Catherine." It was funnyI just laughed at my friend's experience but when it's my turn to experience something like this, I had the same reaction as Bernadette.

Some people surmise that the oldest stories of incest have been written by the Greeks. Some believe they have originated in the Christian Bible, written by the Jewish prophets. But the story of a legendary Casanova has already been written in what is supposed to be the oldest novel in the world: the Tale of Genji. It was a long, complex yarn of intimate relationships of the Prince Genji of 11th century Japa n. Strangely enough, it was scribed by a female novelist and diarist, no other than Murasaki Shikibu.
Tuesday, May 1. 2007
The woman's name was derived from one of renowned Prince Genji's lovers (and later wife). No one really knows who Lady Murasaki really is, since during the Empress Joto mon'in, ruled, it was forbidden to call people by their real name. Instead, they addressed them in such aristocratic titles such as "Her Excellency", etc. Lady Shikibu Murasaki was the first woman novelist in history who made a detailed and consistent account of life and love in the elegant royal society of Japan, circa 1001.

Oedipus and Elvis would have paled in comparison to Prince Genji's adventures with innumerable women during his lifetime. He married Empresses, he fell in love with her aunt, she took her niece as his concubine, and his wife bore a son that later stole his lover. Why did Lady Murasaki write this novel in the first place? It was intended to entertain the ladies in the Empress' court. No one would have thought it was going to be the most romantic work of genius ever written in Japanese history and the whole world.

Back in the old Biblic days, when God or Jehovah saw how vicious the city of Sodom had been, there was no choice but to burn it. People were committing all sorts of felony, from raping women to mating with cows, from stealing property to stoning innocent "criminals". These were abominable in the eyes of Jehovah. To save the righteous, the descendants of Abraham, God sent the angels to tell Lot's household to flee before the city turns to ashes. But there was a dissident, Rebecca, who looked back upon the burning Sodom and morphed into a salt pillar.
Saturday, April 28. 2007
Would you have fled if you were Rebecca? This story has been passed down as a legendary fable on the curse of materialism. The Rebecca character, living with a rich husband in a luxurious estate, apparently couldn't bear the thought of leaving all that wealth behind. It's a human foible -- we are all susceptible to committing. I would have hesitated if I had less faith. Now, anyone who says she's not feeling any bit of remorse at such a hasty and obscene departure is a liar.
Friday, April 27. 2007
I remember Rebecca back in the 1940s as a romantic thriller film. The story revolved around a woman who was married to an older man -- a gloomy character at that -- a la "Jane Eyre" - experiencing the pain, fear, and guilt eating her up when she learns her husband's ex-wife is also named Rebecca. So what exactly seems to be character Rebecca's role in the Christian Bible and elsewhere? I knew someone named Becky who likes ballroom dancing. I don't see any resemblance of her in any of those Rebeccas that I've mentioned, and certainly she doesn't live a gloomy existence. You know there's always a shattering of the myth.
