Names from the Bible are also popular options for baby names. These names have a timeless quality that makes them fitting for babies born today and those born many years from now.
The appeal of using female names from the Bible
The appeal of naming babies with names from the Bible comes with the character that the baby was named after. Biblical names have their own meanings, and parents who name their babies after honest, honorable, and courageous Biblical characters may be hoping that their babies grow up to embody these qualities as well.
Examples of female names from the Bible
Famous examples of female names from the Bible include Sarah, Deborah, and Ruth. Other famous female names include Priscilla, Mary, Esther, Abigail, and Hannah.
Choosing a name based from the Bible for your girl
Most parents choose a name for their baby girl based on the meaning of the name or the woman behind that name. For example, if you want to name your baby after a woman with an admirable character, you can choose among Mary, Esther, Deborah, Hannah, Dorcas, Lois, to name a few. These women presented admirable character traits that made them worthy of mention in the Bible.

My brother is a religious man. When we were kids, he used to tell us that he wanted to become a priest. This did not happen though since he met Sally and they got married. When my sister-in-law was pregnant, my brother was so busy scanning the internet using our portable compact laptop to find a gorgeous name for his daughter. Since my brother is religious, he opted to name his daughter after a famous saint. At first, he wanted to name his daughter Ursula. But when his wife disagreed, he chose the name Veronica after Saint Veronica.
When my brother named his daughter Veronica I thought that he named her after the Archie Comics character, Veronica or Ronnie. Aside from being religious, he was also a huge Archie Comics fan. He loves the character of Veronica even though she's mean and shallow. My brother corrected me by saying that she named my niece after the woman who wiped Jesus' face on his way to the cross. The name of that woman is Veronica. When Jesus was on the way to Calvary, she helped him.
Saint Veronica is famous for the shroud. The shroud is the piece of cloth where the image of Jesus Christ appeared. Remember when Jesus was on his way to the cross? Veronica came near him and cleaned his face with a piece of cloth. After that, Jesus' face miraculously appeared on that cloth. After Jesus died, Veronica became a faithful servant of Jesus and every time someone looks at the shroud, people are healed of their sickness whether physical or spiritual.

For all the Catholics out there, I bet the name Bernadette Soubirous is familiar. She was the famous woman whom the Mother Mary especially chose to make an appearance to and give a message for the whole world one fine morning in 1858. Bernadette of Lourdes, as she is known today, was born in 1844 to a miller family. She's the eldest of six children. Although she came from a poor family, Bernadette maintained a cheerful disposition in life. Mother Mary appeared before her in a cave near the place where she and her friends gathered wood. Mother Mary pointed to Bernadette a spring and asked her to drink from it. After this incident, a lot of devout Catholics visited the spot because it was said to miraculously heal all kinds of infectious deadly sickness. But if there were believers, there were also skeptics. Later in life, Bernadette became a nun and was known all over the world as tho woman who saw Mary's apparition.

In our British Literature class, my professor asked us to form a wide circle. What is this again, I asked myself. The professor was a Socratic kind of teacher. It turned out to be fun, after all. He told us to share why our parents gave us our names and to relate the meaning of our names to our personality. The one that stuck to my memory is my friend Bernadette. She said that she was named after her father, Bernard and not after St. Bernadette of Lourdes. She narrated that people often say that her name is ironic to her personality because she's not demure, religious and even saintly like the Saint Bernadette. But, according to her research, the name Bernadette suggests someone who is a creative genius and temperemental. A person named Bernadette is dead serious about life and is easily hurt by circumstances in life, she found out. When we heard her explanation, we definitely believed her because the explanation is related to her persona.

One fine morning, I received a text message saying that the most romantic thing a person could utter is your name. At first I didn't understand it but as the day went on, I realized that names are relevant because it's the first thing that you tell someone whom you just met. This is the reason why we feel offended and hurt when someone doesn't remember our name. I have a friend named Bernadette whom the male guard in our office calls Catherine. Whenever she passes by, the guard would say, "Hi Catherine." Who wouldn't be annoyed with that? Anyway, I told her to correct the guard. Bernadette said she does everytime but he still kept calling her "Catherine." It was funnyI just laughed at my friend's experience but when it's my turn to experience something like this, I had the same reaction as Bernadette.

Back in the old Biblic days, when God or Jehovah saw how vicious the city of Sodom had been, there was no choice but to burn it. People were committing all sorts of felony, from raping women to mating with cows, from stealing property to stoning innocent "criminals". These were abominable in the eyes of Jehovah. To save the righteous, the descendants of Abraham, God sent the angels to tell Lot's household to flee before the city turns to ashes. But there was a dissident, Rebecca, who looked back upon the burning Sodom and morphed into a salt pillar.

Would you have fled if you were Rebecca? This story has been passed down as a legendary fable on the curse of materialism. The Rebecca character, living with a rich husband in a luxurious estate, apparently couldn't bear the thought of leaving all that wealth behind. It's a human foible -- we are all susceptible to committing. I would have hesitated if I had less faith. Now, anyone who says she's not feeling any bit of remorse at such a hasty and obscene departure is a liar.

I remember Rebecca back in the 1940s as a romantic thriller film. The story revolved around a woman who was married to an older man -- a gloomy character at that -- a la "Jane Eyre" - experiencing the pain, fear, and guilt eating her up when she learns her husband's ex-wife is also named Rebecca. So what exactly seems to be character Rebecca's role in the Christian Bible and elsewhere? I knew someone named Becky who likes ballroom dancing. I don't see any resemblance of her in any of those Rebeccas that I've mentioned, and certainly she doesn't live a gloomy existence. You know there's always a shattering of the myth.

Most of you might be thinking of Sarah as a character in the Bible. To be honest I am not very familiar with Biblical characters, especially that of Sarah. But actually, the Sarah that I'm talking about is not even in the Bible. I am referring to Sarah who was the daughter of Mary Magdalene to Jesus Christ. Sarah is the carrier of the Holy Blood of Christ, or what pop legends refer to as the Holy Grail.
This speculation shocked the whole world when Dan Brown's best-seller The Da Vinci Code was released. The novel speaks of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene being married. It was said that after the Crucifixion Mary Magdalene fled to Gaul, which we now know as country of France. There she gave birth to her daughter to Jesus Christ and she named her Sarah.
From then on the bloodline continued and legends have it that the Merovingian Dynasty of France came from this holy bloodline. It was also said that there is a major white-wash by the church leaders to bury this secret for it will certainly rock the very foundation of Christianity. Debates have stretched on, but personally I would say that The Da Vinci Code is an entertaining piece of literature and that genuine faith must not be shaken by a single book.

The name Mary is one of the most common names in the world, particularly in US. It ranked as the 1st popular female name from 4275 all female names recorded in the list. The name Mary has modified into hundred Mary-origin names, such as Miriam, Mair, Marie, Maria, Mariana, Mariza, Marja, etc.
In the Holy Bible, the mother of Jesus Christ is also named as Mary. In the story, Mary, was supposed to marry Joseph, when an Angel of the Lord came to her, and told about the news that she was carrying a Holy Son, by the Holy Spirit. She was a virgin lady then, that is why, she was recognized as the Virgin Mary by some devotees. Although, the words "virgin Mary" was not exactly written in the Bible, the name is referred to her because she conceived a heavenly humane child through the Holy Spirit.
Mary played a major role, as a mother, in the life of Jesus Christ. From conception to crucifixion of Christ, Mary was always beside Him. Mary came from the descendant of King David, from Judah's tribe.

I don't know why did Samson trust Delilah for a time, though she repeatedly betrayed him by disclosing to the Philistines everything that Samson told her about? Although, I never considered Samson a fool as an empty-headed person, but I wonder why did he allow Delilah to bait her? It's either Samson was madly attracted to Delilah, or Delilah would do everything to get her shekels of silvers; or both.
It seems to me that the story of Samson and Delilah in the Old Testament indicates that man should not fall into seduction of any woman, and give out his power in exchange for pleasure. Delilah, on the other hand, portrayed a very clever character in the Bible; she was able to use her gorgeousness to stumble the strongest man living that time. Although, Samson fell into temptation, God forgave him. He allowed Samson's hair to grow long again, and let him crushed the pillars of Philistines.
Sometimes, an intelligent beautiful lady can weaken the strength of a man. Like the beautiful Delilah, she used her loveliness and her brain to betray Samson.

For most Bible scholars, the character of Mary Magdalene in the life of Jesus is significant as the other 12 disciples. For many, Mary Magdalene was a sinful turned repentant follower of Jesus. She is usually described as a prostitute immoral woman; however, none in the context of the Bible can justify that Magdalene was really a sinful one.
Among all the ladies in the New Testament book, the story of Mary Magdalene was given a strong emphasis. Mary Magdalene was known as the sister of Martha and Lazarus. She was the one who washed the feet of Jesus Christ with crystals of tears and wiped them with her hair, then annointed the feet with expensive oil. And what made this lady more popular was when Mary , also called as the Mary of Bethany, witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. More so, she was the first woman who saw the resurrected Jesus Christ; though at first she did not recognize it was Jesus.
In recent studies, some Bible intellects claim that Mary Magdalene authored the Gospel of John. But, the truth behind the real beloved of Jesus Christ has not yet confirmed. Was it really John the disciple? Was it Mary, His mother? Or, was it Mary Magdalene?

One of the distinctive noble characters in the Old Testament is Ruth. She is an icon of a good daughter-in-law and a good wife. Indeed, many used her famous lines, "Wherever you go, I'll go. Where you live, I'll live... Your God will be my God" for wedding quotes. For women, the faithfulness of Ruth is something good to follow.
These lines are striking to me. I love what she said to Naomi. Although Ruth is a foreigner, she did not hesitate to come with Naomi, her mother-in-law, to chosen Israel land; that's why she uttered those lines. Ruth was very faithful to Naomi that she obeyed all her instructions. She was chosen by God among other ladies, because God knew that Ruth could leave and deny her gods to follow the real God. This faithfulness of Ruth was rewarded. God allowed Boaz, a relative of Naomi and a prominent man, to marry her.
Only few stories were written about mother-in-law-and-daughter-in-law relationship. But, the story of Ruth is really a fascinating one. It is very encouraging for a woman like me to imitate what Ruth did to her mother-in-law. What she did was very pleasing to God.

Among all ladies written in the Bible, Queen Esther is my favorite character. Meaning a "star", Esther became the Queen of Persia who saved the Jews from a definite persecution. It seems to me that Queen Esther was the bravest woman in the Old Testament time. She did not allow Haman to kill her and the Jewish people. In old times, it was not easy for a lady, or even for a queen, to speak to the king and say anything about the kingdom, unless allowed by the king himself. With the courage that God gave to Queen Esther, she successfully did so. She talked to King Ahasuerus about the plan of Haman, and since the King was so pleased with the Queen, he immediately gave the justice for the Jews. Haman was killed.
I really like the story of Queen Esther. She is an icon of a beauty and brain lady. Her story depicts that God is fair. He gives courage and blessings equally to both man and woman. God knew that a woman like Queen Esther could lead the land and His people for His glory and honor.

I have a cousin who's named Hannah. She's a very dear relative of mine. I always feel so close to her even if we don't get to see each other a lot. There's just something about her that's so warm and gentle that I always feel so comfortable with her.
Hannah is of the Hebrew origin. It means "Favor of God, favor and grace." Hannah, is also a Biblical character. She is the mother of the prophet Samuel, it's from the Old Testament. Hannah had asked God for a baby, and God favored her, that's why her name means being favored, because she was literally answered by God. Hannah can also be Anne or Anna, in Germany. Hannah is a popular name but it's usually used as "Hannelore."

Kristen is another female name that is common to my ears. A lot of my friends bear that name, usually with different variations like Kris, Kristina, or Kristi. Heck, even one of the most responsible nannies we had was named Kristi.
The name Kristen is originally a Danish girl's name that has a biblical connotation to it. Kristen refers to the "Anointed" one or simply put, the follower of the Lord Christ. Although Kristen has its Danish roots, the German meaning of Kristen is similar to that previously mentioned. Kristen also takes the form of Christine, which is the Scandinavian version of the biblical name.

Elizabeth is one of the Hebrew names that offer an ordinary individual a glimpse into one of the characters in the Bible. The name, which generally means consecrated to God, is derived from the label of Elisheba, which can also stand for "devoted to God."
This is the name of the wife of Aaron and the name of the mother of John the Baptist, one of the main figures in the Bible's New Testament. The "z" in Elizabeth can be replaced with an s and in addition, Elizabeth has many variations including Elise, Elsa, and Elisa.

One of the most common names a baby girl could have is the name Abigail. This is not to say that name has no basis. Abigail is originally a German label which means " father" or leader, or "joy". In old English, Abigail stands for a biblical connotation which states "God is joy". Another biblical evidence of the use of Abigail is one of King David's wives, whose name also stands for "father be delighted". Abigail or Abbie, in short, became one of the most popular names in the year 2004, ranking number 6.

Eve is probably one of the most famous biblical female names; she is the first woman according to the Bible, after all. She ate the forbidden fruit, the apple and is Adam's wife. Eve is from latin origin and it means the "living one." She is the woman's ultimate ancestor and the mother of the many men in the Bible.
Eve, in Jewish terms, means the evening before a holiday, the beginning of the sunset. Eve is an important name because Eve was an important woman, and Eve will always stay that way.

If I am to have a baby girl, I would most certainly give her the biblical name "Adalia." Adalia means "God is my refuge," it's such a sweet, unique, and beautiful name, and with the most powerful message. It's originally a biblical name, but it also has a German meaning, Adalia in German also means "noble one." Similar names to Adalia are, Adeline, Aline, Della, Adah, Elle, or Adela, all these names are as lovely as Adalia, they also mean, "noble kind" and "adorned."
